Esophageal leiomyoma and simultaneous overlying squamous cell carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract Background Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common epithelial tumor of esophagus. Upper endoscopy with multiple minimally invasive biopsies should be performed to confirm diagnosis. Leiomyoma esophagus rare, but it’s benign submucosal mesenchymal The simultaneous occurrence an overlying lesion and a very rare. This study aims show case operated due squamous that was postoperatively diagnosed coexistent esophageal leiomyoma give clear overview existing literature on it. Case presentation patient 41-year-old woman who underwent three field esophagectomy (McKeown). Pathological evaluation done, had poorly differentiated leiomyomas. A found invading carcinoma. Conclusion It concluded carcinomas may coexist leiomyomas; preexisting tumors have played important role in development by inducing constant stimulation mucosa; endoscopic ultrasonography recommended avoid overestimating extent invasion resultant aggressive radical surgery. As developing countries limited equipment, resection could modality choice treatment.
